Naval Architecture

Orwell Offshore can provide a wide range of Naval Architectural services, ranging from stability studies, ship motions and operability, through to ship structures analyses using finite element analysis.

Using GHS hydrostatics software, Orwell Offshore is able to carry out stability studies ranging from the checking of single loading conditions for compliance with statutory stability requirements, up to the production of full class approved Trim & Stability books for FPSOs.

Hydrodynamic studies are carried out using a suite of software based around Bureau Veritas’ HydroStar program. HydroStar is a three dimensional potential flow solver, capable of analysing floating bodies with or without forward speed in both deep water and in finite depth. It is also able to assess the motions of multiple bodies and the effects of their interactions on motions.

Using the vessel motions output from HydroStar, Orwell Offshore is able to carry out studies on the operability and downtime of vessels in specific sea states and loading conditions, dynamic behaviour of vessels connected to mooring systems and vessels moored alongside quays or other vessels.

Mooring system design and analysis is carried out using the industry standard software packages ARIANE-3D and OrcaFlex. Both allow the dynamic modelling of complex mooring and riser systems. Orwell Offshore has experience not only in the design of mooring systems, but also the development of laydown and recovery procedures for moorings, as well as the development of operational guidance for safe operation whilst connected.

Ship structures are able to be analysed using ANSYS finite element software, to determine the strength of structures as part of vessel conversion projects.
